Generosity at the Waffle House

Updated: Jan 11

In the transition from Nashville to NYC, my adult son, Jackson, and I shared a lunch that turned into a deep reminder of the lasting impact we have on our children. Let me share a heartwarming story that left me beaming with pride and a tear in my eye.

As Jackson narrated the events of the previous night – an evening with college buddies watching the national championship football game – a remarkable incident unfolded. Among the group was a freshmen, an aspiring environmental scientist with an awe-inspiring story of determination.

This young man, facing financial constraints, hesitated when his turn to order at Waffle House arrived. His friends, including Jackson, were well aware of his situation. Despite having limited resources himself, Jackson selflessly stepped up, offering to cover the tab. A simple act of generosity that resonated deeply.

In that moment, I witnessed the beautiful manifestation of values instilled in my son – a testament to the idea that our children do, indeed, heed our teachings. A fist bump across the table spoke volumes, encapsulating a shared understanding of empathy, kindness, and the impact we can make in someone's life.

The experience resonates with the wisdom encapsulated in Proverbs 22:6, "Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it." The verse came to life in Jackson's actions, embodying the values we strive to instill in our children.

And yes, as all good fathers would, I later sent Jackson $20 to cover both Waffle House meals – a small surprise gesture to remind him how proud of him I was.

This story serves as a reminder that the seeds we plant in our children's hearts blossom into actions that not only shape their character but also touch the lives of those around them. So, fellow parents, take heart – your children are indeed listening, and the impact they make in the world is a testament to your guidance.
